About the NYU Sustainability Leaders Fellowship

New York University (NYU), through its Office of Sustainability, is inviting eligible undergraduate and graduate students to apply for the 2027 Sustainability Leaders Fellowship.

The Sustainability Leaders Fellowship is a two-part leadership development programme designed to equip students with sustainability knowledge, practical leadership skills, and the ability to mobilize their peers around environmental challenges.

During Spring 2027, selected fellows will participate in workshops facilitated by community organizers, educators, and professionals working in the sustainability sector. Participants will explore important sustainability issues, develop practical resources for sharing environmental knowledge with fellow students, and learn how to encourage collective action.

The programme also provides opportunities to connect with other student leaders and sustainability professionals working towards the creation of a climate-neutral NYU campus.

After completing the first semester, fellows will have the option to continue into Fall 2027. During this second phase, participants will work independently or in small groups to develop projects addressing sustainability challenges at NYU.

Students who meet the programme's attendance requirements will be eligible to receive a $500 stipend for each semester.

Fellowship Benefits

Selected students will benefit from:

  • Financial support: Receive a $500 stipend for each semester after meeting the applicable attendance requirements.

  • Sustainability education: Participate in workshops led by community organizers, educators, and sustainability experts.

  • Leadership development: Strengthen the skills needed to encourage environmental awareness and mobilize collective action.

  • Practical learning: Develop a toolkit for communicating sustainability knowledge to fellow students.

  • Professional networking: Connect with sustainability professionals and other student leaders.

  • Project development: Gain the opportunity to design sustainability projects during the optional Fall 2027 programme.

  • Campus impact: Contribute to initiatives supporting NYU's ambition of creating a climate-neutral campus.

Students participating in both semesters may be eligible to receive up to $1,000 in total stipend support, subject to attendance requirements.
